The adventures of a group of Šumadija Partisans, led by Spomenka, during 1942 and 1943. The book traces the key moments from the perspective of a group of youths who had been fighting since 1941 against the fascist forces invading Yugoslavia during World War II. As the story begins, the Partisans are situated in a forest near Gornji Milanovac where they have constructed a camp under Spomenka's leadership. While they wait to be taken care of by their superiors on Mount Kopaonik in central Serbia, Čupić manages to make contact with an old acquaintance who brings them provisions and ammunition. However, as a result of a military raid, they are forced to move their camp further into the forest. After a few days of rest and recuperation, Spomdka's group receive their marching orders. They have been tasked with patrolling the Morava River and keeping watch over the activities of the Germans who have established several mines on its banks. In order to ensure that they do not come into contact with each other, Spomdka is ordered to capture a German pilot named Lt. Erhardt who is being held captive by Partisans from another group. Erhardt was testing German planes for bombing runs over Belgrade when he was shot down by a Yugoslav pilot in March 1942. After Spomdka successfully captures Erhardt, they are ordered to prepare for the imminent invasion of Yugoslavia. She and her comrades continue to move down the south bank of the Morava, fortifying their position at various camps. During one stay in an abandoned village, using a map they found in an abandoned schoolhouse, they begin to make plans for where they will make their next camp when they are eventually pushed back by the Germans. After receiving orders from their superior at Nis Fortress, the Šumadija Partisan Group is ordered to conduct an ambush against German military units moving on towards Zagreb. They spend the entire day preparing and then plan to attack German barracks at 4:00 p.m. Unfortunately, they do not succeed in launching their attack and Spomdka and her comrades are forced to retreat back down the Morava riverbank. The Germans launch a retaliatory operation on Nis Fortress at 5:00 p.m., which results in a loss of several lives. In an effort to make sense of what is happening around him, Čupić decides to eavesdrop on a conversation he hears between two British soldiers stationed at a nearby military base. He finds out about an impending invasion by the Allies and is given instructions regarding what to do if German planes begin dropping bombs. Shortly after, Spomdka decides to make their way back up the riverbank where they are reunited with their group. They manage to make it back to the camp at Gornji Milanovac but are immediately ordered back down to Belgrade where they fight for control of the city's airfield. Unfortunately, Spomdka and her comrades are unable to keep control of the airfield for long and are pushed out into an abandoned farmhouse near Knešpolje Lake. Following a small skirmish with German forces, they flee across the lake in order to escape further German bombs. cfa1e77820
